Lesson 35 - How To Conjugate Verbs into the Future Tense, part 1
Hey everyone!
How's it going? We're back with a brand new grammar post, and today it's all about the future. Seems fun, right?
Let's start by saying that, in Korean, there are different kinds of future. One of these is –(으)ㄹ 거예요, which also is the pattern we're going to talk about today. It’s attached to both descriptive and processive verbs, and it’s probably number two in the chart of what future is most used by Koreans.
Let's start by saying that, in Korean, there are different kinds of future. One of these is –(으)ㄹ 거예요, which also is the pattern we're going to talk about today. It’s attached to both descriptive and processive verbs, and it’s probably number two in the chart of what future is most used by Koreans.
It’s also known as ‘probably future’ as its translation is usually ‘going to do’ without a certainty added to it.
내일 그걸 살 거예요
I'm going to buy that tomorrow
그 책을 재미있는 것 같아서 읽을 거예요
I will read that book since it looks interesting
방학을 때에 부산에 갈 거예요
I'll go to Busan on vacation
In the informal speech, which we're going to talk about soon, the last bit of the pattern 거예요 sees the 예요 turn into 야, and the whole form will then be –(으)ㄹ 거야.
한식을 좋아해? 그럼, 네게 뭔가를 요리할 거야
Do you like Korean food? Then, I'll cook something for you
자기야, 그리울 거야!
I'm going to miss you, baby!
전화할 거야
I'm going to call
This type of future can also be added to past tense verbs, and in that case, it will be meant as an action that either probably happened or must have happened.
너랑 부산에 가야 했을 거야
I should have gone to Busan with you
불어를 잘해서 프랑스에서 살았을 거예요
He speaks French well, so he must have lived in France
If the pattern is preceded by the adverb 아마 maybe, and attached to a present tense verb, the whole sentence will refer to a probable present action.
제니가 아마 잘 거예요
Jennie is probably sleeping
아마 생선을 싫어할 거예요
He probably hates fish
Note that according to the speech style used, the pattern may change.
Informal style: 거야
Formal style: 겁니다
Polite style: 거예요
Plain style: 것이다
