Lesson 39 - The Future Modifier

Hey everyone, and welcome to KPOPOLOGY GRAMMAR!

Today's post is still about modifiers, like the past two lessons. We are almost done with this series, so hang in there!

We talked about the Adjective modifier (here), and the Verb modifier (here). Today we're going to introduce you to the Future Modifier, which is the same for both adjective and verbs.

Now, before we start, let me remind you what a Modifier is: it is a grammar pattern that is attached to the verb (or a noun attached to the copula), that alters or modifies the noun or the verb.

These patterns can be very confusing, so don't hold back from asking questions if you have any.

The Future modifier has two forms: if the verb or adjective ends in a consonant, and if it ends in a vowel. Let's look at some verb examples:

가다 ->
to go -> that will go

있다 -> 있을
to have -> that will have

재미있다 -> 재미있을
to be interesting -> that will be interesting

For what concerns ㄹ irregular verbs, the rule is the following:  the part of the verb stem will go, and the verb will act as if it had a vowel ending stem. Said in simpler words, the verbs will basically still have the in the modified version. Let's see what we mean:

알다 ->

to know -> that will know

살다 ->

to live -> that will live

Now, let's look at some sentences:

마실 것을 원해요?
Do you want something to drink?

들어갈 시간이 돼요
It's time to go in

돈이 많이 들 것이에요
It will cost a lot of money

쓸 말이 없어요
I have nothing to write

요리할 사람이 나예요
I'm the person who's going to cook

입에 음식이 가득할 때 말하는 사람이 싫어요
I hate people who talk when their mouths are full of food

내가 영원히 사랑할 사람이 너예요
You're the one I'll love forever

약간 배가 고플 것이 확실해요
I'm sure he'll be a little hungry

한국이 그리울 것 같아요
I think I'm going to miss Korean
