Lesson 13 - The Particles That Make It All Clear - The Possessive Particle

Hello everyone,

Hope this post finds you well! Today we’re once again going to talk about Korean Particles, and just like the post about the particle - (if you don’t remember it, check here), this one is going to be quite short as it’s a very simple particle.

This particle is - which is, as mentioned in the title, the possessive particle. It can be attached to any noun –either consonant or vowel ending ones.

Let's look at some examples, shall we?

그녀의 어머니가 의사예요
Her mother is a doctor

치과 의사의 스튜디오가 도심에 있어요
The dentist’s studio is in the city centre

착가의 대본이 평범해요
The writer’s script is mediocre

그 인기있는 영화의 배우들이 재능이 있네요!
The actors of that popular movie have talent!

그 소년의 목소리가 갑자기 변했어

이모의 집은 바다와 매우 가까워요

There are also specific words which have the possessive meaning to them. Which words are they? They're yours, mine, mine and 저희 ours

Let's look at them closely: is basically + and it's the informal way to say your/yours. Same thing for mine, which is +; and  mine which is +.

Now, you see there's two mine in there, right? Well, it's because they're used in different occasions. One () is used in informal situations, whereas the other one () is used in formal ones.

내 친구야!
It's my friend!

제 집이 저기예요
My house is there

And what about 저희? It's the formal version of 우리의

우리의 가족이 좋아요
Our family is good

저희 집에 오신 것을 환영합니다
Welcome to our house
