Lesson 36 - The Other Nominalizer -음

Hello everyone!

How's it going? We're back with a brand new grammar post. And, today it's all about nominalizers, again.

Today's pattern has still something to deal with the ones in Lesson 35 and 34 (check here and here, if you can't remember). However, the form is different. Let's check it out!

This grammar pattern can be added to both verbs and adjectives, and it's got the same function as the other nominalizer. The form is (으)ㅁ, and it changes depending on the verb stem its attached to. When the verb stem ends in a vowel, then the pattern will end with only , whereas it is if the verb ends with a consonant.

Let's look at some verbs turned into nouns through this pattern:

싸우다   ->   싸움
to fight  ->   fight

꾸다   ->   꿈
to dream  ->   dream

기쁘다   ->   기쁨
to be glad  ->   joy

느끼다   ->   느낌
to feel  ->  feeling

자다   ->   잠
to sleep  ->  slumber

죽다   ->   죽음
to die  ->  death

 Also, know that if the nominalizer is attached to irregular verbs, it will follow the rules of the irregular group they belong to!

걷다   ->   걸음
to walk -> step

돕다   ->   도움
to help -> help

다르다   ->   다름
to be different -> difference

Let's look at some examples:

친절함을 가지고 삶을 살아요
You live with kindness

그는 게으름 때문에 실패했어요
He failed because of his laziness

그녀는 고마움에서 사랑을 바쳤어요
She gave her love out of gratitude

슬픔이 그녀의 기분을 지배했어요
Sadness was her prevailing feeling

당신의 성공은 내 부러움을 자아내요
Your success makes me envious
